The Cost of Migrating to Canada

Updated: Nov 25, 2022

How much does it cost to migrate to Canada? How much money do I need to apply for permanent residency? Are the two main questions asked when someone considers immigrating to Canada through permanent residency.

The amount of funds needed depends on the size of your family and type of immigration program you will apply for. Admittedly, it can be quite expensive, but can prove to be a good financial decision in the long run.

Let’s take a look at the costs you will incur when applying for permanent residency through Express Entry. All fees are noted in Canadian dollars.

  • Language Test: $350 per test per person

  • Education Credential Assessment: $300 - $360 per person (depending on delivery option)

  • Medical Examination: $200 - $500 per person (depending on country)

  • Biometrics: $85 per person; $170 per family

  • Police Certificate: $30 - $100 per person (depending on country)

  • Government Processing Fees: $850 per adult; $230 per dependent child

  • Right of Permanent Residence Fees: $515 per adult; no fee for dependent children

  • Provincial Nomination (if applicable): $250 - $1500 (based on province; only paid by the primary applicant)

  • Other expenses (notaries, affidavits, photographs, courier, translations, etc): $200 per person

Canada Settlement Funds

If you are not applying under the Canadian Experience Class program or do not have a valid arranged job offer; you will be required to provide proof of settlement funds. This is to show that you have enough money to support yourself and family upon arrival in Canada. The minimum amount varies between $13,310 (for a single person) to $35,224 for a family of seven (couple with five children). The minimum amounts are updated annually in January.

Representative Fees

If you choose to hire a representative, such as an immigration consultant (for example: Lumen Immigration Services) or immigration lawyer to assist you with the preparation and submission of your application, fees will also apply varying from $2000 - $10,000 based on the representative chosen.

Hopefully, this helps to shed some light on the financial investment (shift perspective from cost to investment) required to make your Canadian goals and dreams become reality.
